Meet the Director
Emily Kenyon is the director of the 9-12 orchestras at Kennedy High School and the freshman orchestra at Mepham High School in the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD. Previously, she has taught orchestra and general music in South Country CSD and music theory and aural skills courses at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the Eastman School of Music. During her summers, Ms. Kenyon has taught string classes at the Northport S.M.A.R.T. program and coached chamber music groups at the NYSSSA School of Orchestral Studies. She is currently the co-chairperson for the LISFA 11th-12th grade festival and the NMEA Division 3 festival in Nassau County.
As a violinist, Ms. Kenyon has performed in prestigious ensembles such as the Eastman Philharmonia, Eastman Opera Ensemble, the Brevard Festival Orchestra, and the National Orchestral Institute, where she recorded the album Ruggles, Stucky & Harbison: Orchestral Works, nominated for Best Orchestral Performance at the 2018 GRAMMY Awards. She has performed with esteemed conductors such as Keith Lockhart, JoAnn Falletta, David Alan Miller, Asher Fisch, Luis Biava, and Jeffrey Meyer. Ms. Kenyon currently plays violin with the South Shore Symphony Orchestra and enjoys performing around Long Island.
In addition to string teaching and performing, Ms. Kenyon specializes in music theory pedagogy and research. Her research and writing focus primarily on aural skills pedagogy and the relationship between analysis and performance. She has taught various levels of theory and aural skills at the college level and served as a teaching assistant to notable textbook authors Elizabeth West Marvin (Musician's Guide to Theory and Analysis) and Gary Karpinski (Manual for Ear Training and Sight Singing). Ms. Kenyon is a published author in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy.
Ms. Kenyon holds a B.M. in Music Education from Ithaca College and an M.M. in Music Theory from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is a graduate from the Northport-East Northport UFSD and is a proud alumna of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Gemini Youth Orchestra, All-State Symphony and String Orchestras, the NAfME All-Eastern Symphony Orchestra, and the NYSSSA School of Orchestral Studies.
